Registration of Security Service Providers
Section (1) (a) of Chapter 3 of the Private Security Industry Regulations Act states that no person, except a Security Service contemplated in section 199 of the Constitution (Act 108 of 1996) may in any manner render a security service for renumeration, reward, a fee or benefit unless such a person is registered as a security service provider in terms of the Act
Consumer obligation
Consumers of security services have an obligation to only contact security service providers that are registered with PSiRA and permitted to offer services within the industry.
Remember you have a right as a consumer of a security service to request proof of registration with PSiRA from the service provider. You can also get this information at your fingertips by accessing our website at www.psira.co.za or alternatively; you can call our call Centre on 086 133 3850.
When entering into a contract with a service provider, make sure that all security officers appointed for the service are registered with PSiRA and received relevant training for service being rendered.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR AS A SECURITY SERVICE CONSUMER WHEN PROCURING OR ACQUIRING A SECURITY SERVICES
• Is the security business registered with PSiRA? (A registration
certificate to this effect must be made available on request)
• Are all the employees deployed to render a security service registered- with PSiRA? Verification can be made online
• Can the business produce a valid letter of good standing from PSiRA?
• Is the security business registered with COIDA?
• Is the business registered with the Unemployment Insurance Fund
(UIF)?
• Is the business registered with Private Security Sector Provident Fund
(PSSPF)? If exempt, get an exemption letter and proof of registration
with another Fund
• Is the business registered with the National Bargaining Council for the Private Security Sector (NBCPSS)?
Code of Conduct for Security Service Providers
The code of conduct was published in 2003 in terms of Section 28 of the Private Security Industry Regulation Act 9Act 56 of 2001). The purpose of the Code of Conduct is to provide binding rules that security service providers must adhere to in order to achieve and maintain a trustworthy and professional security industry
A security service provider must at all times act in a manner which –
(a) does not threaten or harm the public or national interest;
(b) promotes the stability of the private security industry;
(c) promotes good discipline in the private security industry;
(d) maintains and promotes the status of the occupation of security service provider; and
(e) promotes efficiency in and responsibility with regard to the rendering of security services.

Complaints Office
PSiRA established a complaints office to processes complaints related to the private security industry. This is a platform for consumers to raise their dissatisfaction with the service from the industry

• Complaint regarding the quality of service rendered by security companies (e.g., Product quality, Non-functional alarm system);
• Complaint regarding the conduct of security officers;
• Complaint regarding the conduct of security business owners;
• Unregistered security officers and Untrained security officers;
• Unregistered businesses; and
• Alleged fraud and corruption in the industry
